Sheryl Mai has been a long-time supporter of the Northland Kindergarten Association (NKA) says association president Grant Harrison .

“She has accepted with enthusiasm the opportunity to visit on special occasions, such as opening the new Hurupaki kindergarten (in her pre-mayoral days) and Manaia View Kindergarten more recently. Her attendance at these events adds to the importance of the day for these kindergartens, the parents and the children.”

Mr Harrison says the kindergarten community sees not only her attendance as significant but it also acknowledges the genuine pleasure she gets from interacting with the children as well as staff.

“Sheryl acknowledged the commitment to excellence of the NKA with her presence and support at the Northland Westpac Business Excellence Awards.  NKA placed first in the Not for Profit and earlier this year NKA was a finalist in the Governance section at the Prime Minister’s Excellence in Education awards,” he says. “She also attended and presented awards at the annual NKA staff appreciation function.”

He said having the mayor at these functions, where the staff, management and organisations are recognised for achievement and excellence  demonstrates her support for the kindergarten community.

“But also she is clearly seen as a leadership role model for women in an industry where the workforce is significantly women.”
