Having the Whangarei district Mayor on the Sport Northland Board of trustees is a “huge” advantage to what the board wants to achieve, according to former board chair Chris Biddles.

“It was huge for us – it opened opportunities that having just a district councillor representative didn’t afford.”

Mr Biddles said he had “chased” Mayor Mai to be on the board, partly because he knew her work ethic when she was a council representative on the board from 2004-2010 – “but mainly because she’s very very good.”

“She’s a great communicator and strategic thinker, a team player and very supportive of other board members.”

He said Sport Northland had made great gains in recent years with its core business of promoting sport and recreation events and supporting sports codes develop their governance, management and participation structures.  He put that down to having a cohesive, positive and honest board as well as the committed input of individual board members.

“I get honest feedback from board members and I value that.  It’s also really good to work with people like Sheryl – I value her as a colleague but also as a friend.”
