The district’s future lies in the hands of its youth – and Whangarei Mayor Sheryl Mai gets big thumbs up from Northland Youth Theatre manager Jess Collins for her commitment to young people.
“Whenever we have a show she’s there, whenever we need to put in a funding application she writes a letter of support in her capacity as Mayor – Sheryl really cares about Northland Youth Theatre and the people in the organisation,” Jesse says.
“Not only does she come in and celebrate what we’re doing but she has a fabulous relationship with youth of all ages – she sees young people as important.”
Northland Youth Theatre has been going for 31 years and over those years has met the needs of many aspiring young actors and directors as well as helped develop the skills of those working behind the scenes. The organisation is currently looking at working further afield, such as in the Hokianga.
“NYT gives young people a voice and an opportunity to develop their dramatic skills. Having Sheryl’s support is vital for us to continue offering that opportunity.”
